Hector has coached at Rose Bowl Aquatics for over 10 years. In 2017, He was honored to be named Southern California Swimming’s Coach of the Year and an ASCA Age Group Coach of the Year finalist. Another of many highlights also includes coaching a swimmer to break National Age Group Records in 6 different events. Hector started coaching as a teenager teaching stroke lessons, and progressing to teaching novice swimmers and to assistant competitive age group coach, and on to head age group coach in 2017. Initially, it was just a summer job, but as he delved deeper into the competitive swimming world, Hector says, “I found a passion in influencing young athletes through this sport. I wasn’t the best swimmer as a child. In fact, growing up, I didn’t even like swimming. I was forced to attend practice, pressured to beat certain peers, and it wasn’t an enjoyable experience for me. But as I started coaching, I learned that I just wasn’t given the opportunity to like the sport. So that is my top priority as a coach today.” Hector says he wants to provide an opportunity for young swimmers to question and understand swimming, set goals, and find joy in the process.
