Championship Preparation: Nutrition Tips

By Fitter and Faster Staff

As your swimmer gears up for their championship meet, proper nutrition is key to ensuring they perform at their best. At Fitter & Faster Swim Camps, we’re not just focused on technique and training — we also believe that fueling your swimmer’s body the right way plays a critical role in their success. To help them feel their best on the big day, we’ve put together 5 essential nutrition tips that will maximize their performance in the pool.

3 Nutrition Tips to Race Faster

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Swimmers need to stay hydrated to maintain peak performance and reduce the risk of injury. Ensure your swimmer drinks plenty of water before, during, and after their practice and racing sessions. Hydration isn’t just for the day of the meet — it’s a full-time commitment!

2. Focus on Balanced Meals

Fueling up with a combination of carbs, lean proteins, and healthy fats will help your swimmer feel energized. Prior to the meet, aim for a balanced meal 3-4 hours before their event. Think whole grains, lean meats, vegetables, and a small portion of healthy fats. This helps fuel muscles and keeps energy levels steady.

3. Snack Smart

When it’s closer to race time, your swimmer may need a snack. Go for something light but energy-boosting like a banana, a granola bar, or some yogurt. These quick bites provide a great mix of carbs and protein for sustained energy without feeling too heavy.

4. Focus on Energy-Rich Foods

A day or two before the championship meet, focus on consuming energy-rich foods to ensure your swimmer’s muscles are stocked up with energy. Opt for complex carbohydrates like whole grains, sweet potatoes, and pasta. This helps maximize glycogen stores, which your swimmer will use for energy during their race.

5. Avoid Heavy or Greasy Foods

While it’s tempting to indulge, avoid heavy or greasy foods (like fast food or deep-fried options) in the days leading up to the meet. These can slow digestion and leave your swimmer feeling sluggish. Instead, stick to lighter, easily digestible options to keep them feeling their best.
