5 Tips for Race Day
At Fitter & Faster Swim Tour, we know that competition days can be exciting—and a little nerve-wracking—for both swimmers and their families. As your swimmer prepares for their next big meet, we want to share 5 simple tips to help ensure they perform at their best and that the day runs smoothly!
- GET GOOD SLEEP
Swimmers perform best when they are well-rested! Make sure your swimmer gets a full night’s sleep before the competition. A good night’s sleep helps with energy levels, focus, and recovery. Rest is as important as practice! - HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE
Dehydration can negatively affect performance, so remind your swimmer to drink plenty of water the day before and during the meet. Encourage them to avoid sugary drinks and instead focus on water and electrolyte-replenishing beverages to stay in top shape. - PACK SMART AND BE PREPARED
There’s nothing worse than rushing to find something last minute! Pack a bag the night before the competition with everything you need for a long swim meet day. Don’t forget your:
- 2 of everything! Keep a backup racing suit, cap, and goggles in case anything rips.
- Multiple towels to stay warm and dry
- Plenty of warm clothes to keep your muscles warm and loose
- Healthy snacks and drinks
- Sunscreen and a hat (if it’s an outdoor meet)
- Socks and shoes to keep your feet warm
- TIMING IS KEY
Swimmers should know about how long their pre-race routine takes so that they can time it to be ready to go exactly when they need to be behind the blocks. Help your swimmer figure out when to have a snack, start stretching, and do their warm up so that they don’t end up getting cold and they don’t feel rushed before each race. - FOCUS ON FUN
Competition days are exciting, but they can also be stressful. Encourage your swimmer to have fun and enjoy the experience, whether it’s cheering on teammates, making new friends, or celebrating personal bests. A positive attitude can make all the difference, and after all, swimming should be fun! (Here are some tips for things to say to your swimmer on race day)
