Gratitude is something that Kristen Romano practices in life and in swimming as she strives to achieve personal goals, no matter how challenging they may be. She says, “that’s what separates a challenge, or a difficult thing you have to do, from an opportunity, or something you get to do. Find something to be grateful about, whether it’s related to swimming or not.” By sharing this philosophy with clinic participants, she hopes to inspire the next generation of swimmers to embrace the opportunities presented by swimming, and find gratitude along the way.

Kristen is a successful mid-distance swimmer, holding Puerto Rican national records in the 200- and 400-meter individual medley, as well as OSU individual records in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle. Kristen says young swimmers may be intimidated by mid-distance and long-distance events, and she encourages them to use the skills they learn in her clinics to try new events. “A lot of athletes, and their parents, want to know how to broaden their meet schedule and tackle new events. It’s all about knowing the requirements for each race, and executing them at the highest level.” Kristen breaks down the strategies for different races, instilling confidence in clinic participants to swim outside their comfort zone.

Kristen understands the importance of connecting with age group swimmers and hopes to inspire a love and curiosity for the sport. “When I was an age group swimmer, my team had a national team member visit, answer questions, demonstrate drills, and take pictures with the team. I remember how inspired and out-of-my-skin excited I was when he talked about his experiences and successes.”

Participant Feedback From Kristen's Camps

“Matt and Kristen really broke down all the techniques. They were hands on even with a large group and provided feedback to everyone. They were super patient and very knowledgeable! Highly Recommend!”

“Matthew and Kristen were amazing coaches and my son really enjoyed the camp! They are great athletes and instructors. Can’t wait to take more clinics in the future!”

“The clinicians were outstanding. Coach Matt and Coach Kristen were some of the best coaches. Both our daughters attended the camp. It was our 13 year old’s birthday the second day of the camp and she couldn’t stop talking about how much she learned at the camp. Our oldest daughter who also attended (14 years old) said the coaches gave her a new love for swimming. The coaches were inspiring and knowledgeable. Coach Matt and Kristen have a clear understanding of how to best work with kids of all ages. The drills taught were very useful for advancing swim technique. I am very thankful for the time both of them took to help better the technique of both our daughters through individualized instruction.”
