SWIMPOSIUM: September 6, 2025
This full-day Swimposium is packed with high-impact sessions to strengthen performance, leadership, and resilience in and out of the pool. Each session is led by trusted experts and designed to prepare swimmers for peak performance — from high school to collegiate levels and beyond.
- Performing Under Pressure Led by Dr. Zac Hojnacki, Performance Coach & Mental Skills Educator - 9–10:25 AM: In this session, swimmers will learn how to manage nerves, stay focused in high-pressure moments, and recover quickly from mistakes. Dr. Zac shares practical mental strategies that help athletes feel more confident and in control when it counts most — in and out of the pool.
- Leadership in Sport / Junior Officials Led by PVS Athlete Representatives - 10:30–11:55 AM: Swimmers will dive into what it means to lead by example on their teams and in the broader swim community. This peer-led session covers sportsmanship, personal accountability, and how to get involved as a Junior Official — building a foundation of respect and ownership.
- Keynote Lunch Led by Coach Matt Barany (Head Coach, University of Richmond Women’s Swimming) 12–1:20 PM: During this midday break, all participants will gather for a shared keynote experience with Coach Matt Barany — a dynamic speaker known for his passion, creativity, and thought-provoking perspective on sport and personal growth. His talk, Preparing for High Performance, will explore the power of curiosity, the importance of connection, and how we can all grow through our roles in the swimming community — as athletes, coaches, and parents.
- College Swimming in 2025: What Athletes, Coaches, and Parents Need to Know Led by Samantha Barany (Executive Director, CSCAA) & Guest College Coaches - 1:30–2:55 PM: Samantha Barany, Executive Director of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), brings unmatched insight into the current college swimming environment. In College Swimming in 2025: What Athletes, Coaches, and Parents Need to Know, she’ll be joined by a panel of experienced college coaches to discuss recruiting trends, eligibility expectations, and how club coaches and families can best support athletes pursuing collegiate swimming.
- SafeSport for Athletes Led by Liz Hahn (Safe Sport Director, USA Swimming) - 3–4:30 PM: A critical session for every athlete, this presentation covers athlete rights, personal boundaries, and how to recognize and respond to red flags. Liz empowers swimmers to advocate for themselves and help create a safer, more respectful environment for everyone.
BUTTERFLY TECHNIQUE: September 7, 2025
Butterfly is powerful, rhythmic, and beautiful when done well—but challenging to master. We’ll break it down into fundamental skills and help swimmers understand how to swim fly efficiently across all distances. An efficient butterfly is a fast butterfly! This session will be led in part by Olympic gold medalist Jack Conger, a former Potomac Valley swimmer whose name still proudly graces the iconic record board at the University of Maryland — bringing world-class insight and hometown inspiration to every stroke.
- BODYLINE: Fatigue often breaks down butterfly technique late in races. We’ll work on maintaining a strong bodyline and high hips using a solid downkick on hand entry, an effective chest press, and a long reach out front. A strong core connection will help swimmers stay streamlined and efficient from start to finish.
- KICK: Each butterfly stroke has two kicks to propel the swimmer towards the other end of the pool! If the kicks are properly timed and strong, they can aid your swimmer’s efficiency and stroke timing! Your swimmer will work on how and when to kick in butterfly for maximum speed.
- THE CATCH: A proper catch starts with a well positioned hand entry. Hands should enter flat (not thumbs down), setting up a high-elbow catch that drives forward momentum. At the highest speeds, the momentum of the entry can be used to generate power on the water. For greater efficiency swimmers should reach forward and extend in the glide phase of the stroke.
- PULL PATTERN: Once swimmers establish a vertical forearm, the pull should move straight back toward the feet. Wrist angles must shift to keep the palms facing backward. We’ll emphasize exiting the stroke with momentum—without flipping water up, which wastes energy and drives the body down.
- BREATHING: Breath timing in butterfly affects everything—bodyline, pull, kick, and speed. Swimmers will learn to start their breath during the catch phase of stroke when their power is highest in order to support lifting their head and shoulders without their hips falling. They will also learn to keep their head low to the water in order to maintain the most efficient body position.
✅ Suggested Participants This experience is ideal for competitive swimmers ages 13 & Over who are looking to sharpen their racing skills, grow their leadership, and gain a deeper understanding of the sport. Whether you’re targeting personal bests, preparing for college swimming, or building confidence in and out of the pool — this weekend delivers tools, insight, and inspiration to support your goals.
