In partnership with Indiana Swimming, The Fitter and Faster Swim Tour is coming to Indianapolis for the bi-annual Green Flag Clinic Series designed for participants who are new to competitive swimming (have been competing for 3 years or less).
The focus of this Indiana Swimming Green Flag clinic are the common attributes between swimming freestyle and backstroke fast! At this swim clinic, your swimmer will learn about these important attributes to race with more speed, power and efficiency from Team USA Olympic Coach Todd Schmitz and National Champion Laura Sogar.
Coach Schmitz has worked with a number of swimmers from the time they were young age groupers through qualifying for American National teams and Olympic medals including Missy Franklin and Clark Smith. He started coaching Missy at just 7 years old and was her coach at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics! Scroll down for more details on the curriculum.

Freestyle and Backstroke
Did you know that freestyle and backstroke are called the long axis strokes? It's because during freestyle and backstroke, a swimmer rotates on their long axis to get more power out of every pull. There are also many other common attributes between these two strokes and understanding the similarities can greatly benefit a swimmer so that they can improve in both! At this Indiana Swimming Green Flag Clinic, Olympic coach Todd Schmitz and National Champion Laura Sogar will work with swimmers to deepen their knowledge of technqiue for faster freestyle and backstroke technique.
- Body Position: Swimming with length and a strong, engaged core is crucial to being able to cut through the water in freestyle and backstroke. This is the foundation of both strokes. Participants will work with Coach Todd to find the right way to hold their bodies to swim fast!
- Rotation: The power in freestyle and backstroke comes from a powerful and connected rotation. The proper amount of rotation for each swimmer can vary. Coach Todd will help participants find the proper amount of rotation while connecting it to the arm pull so that swimmers will get more power and distance out of every stroke.
- Early Catch: Don't waste any time in the arm pull! Pressing back into the water as early as possible with the hand and forearm allows a swimmer to pull more efficiently. Bending the elbow early in the stroke achieves the angle needed to grab onto as much water as possible to press off of. Learn how to achieve this important component to freestyle and backstroke.
- Distance Per Stroke: You can move your arms as fast as you can, but if you aren't getting long, powerful strokes, you won't go anywhere! Learn how to maximize your distance per stroke by holding on to the water and getting more power.

PUT YOUR SKILLS TO THE TEST
Participants will take their strokes to top speed and get their heartrate up with a set from Todd Schmitz. They will get to work on holding on their form while also getting their heartrate up to put their new skills to the test of fatigue.
