SUGGESTED PARTICIPANTS: This session is designed for swimmers age 12 & over.

An effective way for fast swimmers to get even faster is to practice their starts, underwater dolphin kicking and finishes in every practice and race. Olympian Nick Thoman will teach you the key components to enhance your overall race performance! 

FLAT STARTS: Set the tone for a great race with a powerful, streamlined and fast start. There are countless intricacies to performing a great start and you only get better with practice; Nick Thoman will share stories on how he found time to practice and improve their starts both in and out of the water and then he'll teach you some of his favorite strategies on how to execute this explosive and athletic movement.
  • HAND PLACEMENT: Know exactly where to place your hands so that you can pull with your arms on the start.
  • FOOT PLACEMENT: Everyone's foot placement might be a bit different but our elite athlete will teach you how to figure out what is best for you to gain both stability on the block and explosive power when leaving the block.
  • BODY LINE/ENTRY: How you enter the water is just as important as how explosive you are off the blocks. Experiment with how steep is too steep, how to get into one small entry hole and how to stay strong from fingertips to toes. Work on eliminating water resistance for the tightest possible entry and learn to squeeze the ears tightly and elongate the body for the most optimal position.
UNDERWATER DOLPHIN KICKING: Absolutely, undeniably, the fastest way to move through the water! Whether you dolphin kick on your stomach, side or back, understanding the importance of streamlined, underwater speed is vital for every swimmer! Olympian Nick Thoman will teach you how to make the most of your streamline and underwater kicking, as well as teach you drills on how to improve upon those skills.
  • BODY POSITION: The simplest way to maintain your speed is a TIGHT STREAMLINE! The Elite Clinician will reinforce to you why they NEVER take streamlining for granted. Every fast swimmer must look like a rocket when they push off the wall! 
  • CORE DRIVEN: Not a single great dolphin kicker kicks from their knees down! Our clinician will instruct you on how to engage your kick from the core, utilizing your chest press and hip drive to create a fluid undulating motion.
  • KICK COUNT/FREQUENCY: Take advantage of every single kick for better training and racing! Learn to use the up AND down portion of the dolphin kick for better distance per kick. Smart racers know their kick count off the start and the walls. We will help you create a goal for how many kicks you should hold yourself accountable to now, and in the future, as you improve. 

TURNS: The best swimmers carry their speed and power through the turn! This is a huge opportunity for "free speed" and a great area to drop time. Accelerate in and explode off the wall by learning drills and tips from an Olympic gold medalst!

  • Approach: The more speed you approach the wall with, the more energy you'll create to leave the wall with speed! Learn the importance of building your tempo into the wall!
  • Rotation: Getting your feet to the wall quickly is paramount for a fast turn! Practice a fast and tight rotation by learning to use your head, core and by driving your heels to the wall.
  • Push Off: Leaving the wall streamlined, with a well timed glide, is one of the easiest and most valuable habits you can create for yourself!

 

ASK QUESTIONS: Swimmers and parents are invited to ask Nick Thoman questions during a Q&A session. Hear him talk and gain insight into his training regimen, diet and nutrition, and recovery tactics.

WATCH THE CLINICIAN: Observe Nick swim at full speed and demonstrate a progression of perfectly executed drills to achieve powerful, efficient and fast freestyle and breaststroke.
