SUGGESTED PARTICIPANTS: This clinic session is recommended for swimmers ages 11 & 12.

BACKSTROKE STARTS: Start out every race ahead of the competition with powerful, streamlined, and fast backstroke start. There are countless intricacies to performing a great backstroke start and you only get better with practice. Olympic gold medalist Tyler Clary will teach you some of his favorite strategies on how to execute this explosive and athletic movement.

  • Position your arms: Knowing where to correctly place your hands and pull up with your arms in the ready position will put you in a better position to use your arms and generate more power off of the backstroke start.
  • Position your feet: Who doesn't hate when their feet slip on the start? We'll help you understand where to place your feet, and why, so you reduce the chances of slipping feet and increase the explosiveness out of your legs as you jump off of the wall. 
  • Streamlined Entry: How you enter the water is just as important as how explosive you are off the start - all the power you created can be for naught if you don't carry that speed forward. Position your body so that you reach the proper depth for your underwater dolphin kicking and reduce drag. 
  • Breakout: Timing the transition of dolphin to flutter kicking, as well as when to start that first pull, is critical in maintaining speed. 

BACKSTROKE: Identify with Tyler Clary the key factors to build a balanced and propulsive backstroke. It will require a strong core, a small and steady kick, and a pull pattern where pressure is put immediately backwards on the water.

  • Better body position: Learn why it is so important to ride high on the water with the hips and feet in line with the spine. Tyler will each you the importance of your head position so that you drive forward with speed and efficienty!
  • Powerful Rotation: Learn to shrug your shoulders and get your arm right next to your head for a proper entry position anda powerful pull. 
  • Efficient Pull: Accelerating your hand into the entry and getting into a clean catch position will help you set up a pull that will propel you forward.
