Past Clinic
The fastest point in any race is the start. This clinic will help make both your flat starts and relay exchanges faster. There are countless intricacies to performing a great start and you only get better with practice; Olympians Clark Burckle and Alyssa Anderson will share stories on how they found time to practice and improve their starts both in and out of the water and then they'll teach you some of their favorite strategies on how to execute this explosive and athletic movement. You'll also get the chance to perfect your finish into the wall.
FLAT STARTS: Set the tone for a great race with a powerful, streamlined and fast start.
- REACTION TIME: Practice drills for faster reaction time off the blocks.
- BODY LINE/ENTRY: Learn to squeeze the ears tightly and elongate the body for the optimal position for ultimate acceleration off the start.
- BREAKOUT: Focus on pushing the streamline to make this the fastest part of your race!
RELAY EXCHANGES: So many swimmers aspire to be on relays - it is an honor! Relay starts can often make or break a team. In this high performance clinic, we will highlight the fine points of a well-timed relay exchange to ensure a LEGAL but small exchange time.
- SWIMMING IN (FINISHER): In most cases, it is the swimmer finishing that creates an early take off; learn how to adjust for your finish and why it is so crucial you come in long and with speed.
- TAKING OFF (STARTER): Learn cues on how to read the swimmer finishing so that you can execute a well-timed take off.
- USING A STEP AND ARM SWING: Using a step forward in the take off is a distinct advantage over a flat start! We will work on the timing of moving your feet forward while you swing the arms so that you create maximum momentum.
FINISHES: Races are won and lost at any point throughout, but being out-touched makes one feel like it was all in the finish. In many cases, it was a final stroke too long or short, a touch with the palm, an unneeded breath or losing your kick. All of these skills will be covered as they are the essentials to a fast finish.
