FLAT STARTS:  Set the tone for a great race with a powerful, streamlined and fast start. There are countless intricacies to performing a great start and you only get better with practice; Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce will share stories on how she found time to practice and improve her starts both in and out of the water and then she'll teach you some of her favorite strategies on how to execute this explosive and athletic movement.

  • REACTION TIME:  Practice drills for a faster reaction time off the blocks.
  • BODY LINE/ENTRY:  Learn to squeeze the ears tightly and elongate the body for the most optimal position for ultimate acceleration off the start.
  • BREAKOUT:  Focus on pushing the streamline to make this the fastest part of your race!

RELAY EXCHANGES: So many swimmers aspire to be on relays - it is an honor! Relay starts can often make or break a team. In this high performance clinic we will highlight the fine points of a well timed relay exchange to ensure a LEGAL but small exchange time.

  • SWIMMING IN (FINISHER):  In most cases, it is the swimmer finishing that creates an early take off; learn how to adjust for your finish and why it is so crucial you come in long and with speed.
  • TAKING OFF (STARTER):   Learn cues on how to read the swimmer finishing so that you can execute a well timed take off.
  • USING A STEP AND ARM SWING:  Using a step forward in the take off is a distinct advantage over a flat start! We will work on the timing of moving your feet forward while you swing the arms so that you create maximum momentum.
