Michael Eastman is an ACC Champion and two-time Olympic Trials qualifier specializing in sprint freestyle. He enjoys working with participants at Fitter and Faster Swim Camps, sharing his knowledge of the sport and what it’s like to compete at an elite level. Michael says, “I have a lot of knowledge about the world of swimming and want to share it with the next generation of athletes; everything from swimming in college, to the recruitment process, and what college coaches are looking at.” While he enjoys working with teenage camp participants, he finds that there is a special subset of younger camp participants he can relate to. “I went through a period of lacking focus and dedication to swimming, so I find I can connect with camp participants who may be there only because their parents want them to. I approach teaching with kindness and, let’s be honest, leniency, which makes the camp experience fun for even those that are somewhat resistant to swimming.”
Michael had many positive influences on his swimming career. He credits his parents with supporting his dedication to the sport, saying that they enjoyed swimming and enjoyed watching him succeed. During his early high school years, Michael lost interest in swimming but had a high school coach and mentor that was also a family friend who guided him to enjoy being in the water again. Through positive reinforcement and a supportive team environment, Michael rediscovered his love for the sport.
Michael reminds Fitter and Faster camp participants that they are humans first, and athletes second. He says, “Coaches that have valued me as a person, and not just by my times, are those that I’ve had the best relationship with and who have motivated me to work hard in and out of the pool. This sport can be grueling, so take it one day at a time and have fun with it.”
