EXPERIENCE
Marwan Elkamash represented Egypt in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, and was a gold medalist in the 200 butterfly at the 2018 African Swimming Championships. During his time at Indiana University and the University of South Carolina, he specialized in mid- and long-distance freestyle, earning All American honors and was first team All-Big Ten.
You can find Marwan leading freestyle clinics for Fitter & Faster Swim Camps, where he challenges clinic participants to try different events. He transitioned from a mid-distance to a distance swimmer later in his career, and believes that swimmers shouldn’t be held to a singular focus.
Mawan credits coaches like Mark Shubert and Mark Bernadino for inspiring him to coach. He says, “I like to learn from the best in the sport, which helps me to be a better teacher. I learned effective techniques that I take into Fitter and Faster clinics, and apply them to help young athletes improve their swimming.”
While Marwan had success as an age group swimmer in his home country of Egypt, he credits his experience swimming in the US and competing on the international stage with transforming his career. He says, “because of swimming I was able to study at and swim for some of the best schools in the US. I got to travel to over 25 countries and be surrounded by some of the greatest coaches in the sport.”
The rigors of elite swimming can be challenging, and Elkamash found that journaling was a positive outlet. He encourages Fitter and Faster clinic participants to find something that helps center them, and let go of the stresses that come from rigorous training and tough competition.
