EXPERIENCE

Dr. Josh White brings a unique combination of elite coaching experience and deep expertise in swimming science to his role at Fitter & Faster. Holding a Ph.D. in Human Performance from the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming at Indiana University, he proudly considers himself the “ultimate swimming nerd.” His academic background focuses on performance exercise physiology while encompassing biomechanics, motor control, nutrition, sports psychology, and more. Passionate about coaching, he emphasizes understanding the “why” behind every aspect of training.

With more than 20 years of coaching experience, Dr. White has made a significant impact at institutions such as Indiana University, Pomona College, and most notably, the University of Michigan, where he served as Associate Head Coach for 15 years. During his tenure, his teams captured 12 Big Ten titles and the 2013 Men’s NCAA Championship. He has coached athletes to American, US Open, NCAA, and National Age Group records, as well as guided US Olympians in events ranging from the 200-meter races to 10K open water competitions. Renowned for his ability to develop athletes, he played a pivotal role in Connor Jaeger’s progression from earning his first US National Cut to making the Olympic team in under a year. His coaching also contributed to a US Open and NCAA record in the 800 Freestyle Relay, with swimmers averaging a remarkable five-second improvement under his guidance.  A testament to his ability to elevate entire training groups to peak performance, at various points Dr. White placed as many as three athletes into the same event final at the US Olympic Trials and NCAA Championships, four at US World Championship Trials, and six in a Big Ten Championship final.

Dr. White’s success on the national and international stage has earned him multiple prestigious coaching roles, including serving as a coach for Barbados at the 2012 Olympics and for multiple US World Championship teams. A Level 5-certified ASCA coach, he is a member of the USOPC Order of Ikkos and a recipient of the Glen S. Hummer Award for his contributions to open water swimming. He has also played a key role as a member of the USA Swimming Open Water Steering Committee.
