Introduction

Butterfly and Breaststroke have many similarities between them, being Short Axis Strokes. Rhythm and body position are some key features that swimmers will have the opportunity to perfect. Beyond that, swimmers will learn the important role that postures and core strength play into short axis swimming. Sign up for this three day clinic to learn many new drills and technical details to help drop time.

Curriculum

DAY ONE (FRIDAY): HIGH PERFORMANCE BUTTERFLY & BREASTSTROKE

Butterfly and breaststroke are called the “short axis” strokes because swimmers undulate at their hips, giving the strokes their distinct up and down motion. These strokes share many other technical attributes, and can be challenging strokes to master due to the importance of rhythm and timing. Working on these two strokes together will deepen a swimmer’s understanding of the technique required to swim with more efficiency and speed.

  • BUTTERFLY: Perfect the complexities of balancing power and fluid rhythm in one of the most dynamic athletic strokes. Elite butterfliers maintain forward momentum by setting an immediate high catch with a perfectly timed kick. They are committed to a breathing pattern, perfecting their distance per stroke, and maintaining a horizontal body position. Our clinicians will help swimmers become committed to these same skills to create better habits every time they swim butterfly!
  • BREASTSTROKE: Learn to utilize the same technique and strategies as world-class breaststrokers. Participants will continue the process of reducing drag in this rhythmic stroke. We will focus on the timing of the kick and pull; swimming in a horizontal plane with a small powerful kick; keeping the hips high throughout the whole stroke; and generating forward power in their recovery.

DAY TWO (SATURDAY): UNDERWATERS & PULL-OUTS

Swimmers will identify and work on what techniques carry their momentum through the turn to get in and out of every wall faster. Participants will practice accelerating into the wall, using their core and arms to get through the turn, and planting the feet on the wall for a powerful push-off in the perfect streamline. They will follow up with discovering faster ways on how to break a streamline into a strong underwater pullout.

  • UNDERWATER DOLPHIN KICKING: The fastest swimmers know how to weaponize their underwater. It's one of the most crucial components to maintaining speed off the walls! Understanding the importance of streamlined underwater speed is vital for every level of swimmer.
  • BREASTSTROKE PULLOUTS: The best breaststrokers are faster under the water than on the surface! Swimmers will polish up the components and sequence of movements that make up a fast underwater breaststroke pullout.

DAY THREE (SUNDAY): OPEN TURNS

Swimmers will identify and work on what techniques carry their momentum through the turn to get in and out of every wall faster. Participants will practice accelerating into the wall, using their core and arms to get through the turn, and planting the feet on the wall for a powerful push-off in the perfect streamline. They will follow up with discovering faster ways on how to break a streamline into a strong underwater pullout.

  • OPEN TURNS: Swimmers should not just go through the motions of an open turn; if they’re doing this, they are actually stopping and then trying to regain speed. An expertly executed open turn involves carrying momentum from one lap into the next. Swimmers will work with our clinicians to nail an efficient and quick open turn.
